Navigating the Changing Tides of the Mid Century Modern (MCM) Furniture Market

In the world of vintage and antique furniture, trends come and go. Several years ago, I set up My Vintage Market, breathing new life into antique pieces. By lovingly restoring and refurbishing them, I injected a modern twist whilst retaining unique design features, carefully preserving the history of each item.

Most of my pieces are sourced from my clients, who are usually downsizing or clearing a loved one’s home. Through the passage of time, these clients more often came from the baby-boomer generation. With their discerning taste and appreciation for craftsmanship, I was lead into the realm of mid-century modern (MCM) furniture. These pieces were sought after by my buyers for their sleek designs and enduring quality. They gave a contemporary aesthetic while maintaining a nod to the past.

However, over the last couple of years, the MCM market has exploded. This has become even more apparent since my last post in June. What was once a niche appeal has now become a mainstream trend. Platforms like Facebook Marketplace and eBay have been flooded with a plethora of MCM offerings. Prices have soared to unrealistic heights, as more sellers jumped on the bandwagon to make a quick buck. I have had potential clients, influenced by inflated online prices, expecting hefty sums for their MCM pieces. Meeting their expectations become increasingly challenging.

Recently, I encountered a prime example - a seemingly lovely teak wall unit being sold on Facebook Marketplace by a private seller with a big price tag. Upon requesting additional photos, the true condition unfolded; stains and water damage, a door missing, split wood and holes in the back. The buyer informed me that it had been valued at £800! It became clear to me then that the MCM trend has reached a tipping point and the market has become saturated. True mid-century enthusiasts are no longer finding the bargains they once enjoyed and small businesses like mine, built on a genuine love of vintage style, are suffering.

In response, I have decided to take a different path, to make a stand and restore some balance in a market that has lost touch with its roots. My commitment to selling quality mid-century pieces persists, but I have chosen to price my items more realistically, breaking away from the MCM rat race. To kick off this new chapter, I'm offering a 15% discount on all mid-century pieces in my shop.

Additionally, I will shift more focus back towards refurbishing timeless antique pieces. I want to give my buyers something special, that oozes character and individuality, and remain dedicated to preserving the authenticity of vintage and antique furniture. As I navigate these changing tides, I want my Vintage Market to stand out from the crowd.
